Grade, screen
and SCA score.

This is how a lot is described in the specification. Grade names differ between countries, so each offer states exactly how the grade is defined for that lot.

01

Screen size

Bean size by sieve, in 1/64 of an inch. Screen 18 is about 7.1 mm, 17 about 6.7 mm, 15 about 6 mm. "Screen 15+" means beans retained on a size 15 sieve.

02

AA, AB, PB

Size grades used in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. AA is the largest bean, usually screen 17-18 and above; AB is screen 15-16; PB (peaberry) is a single round bean.

03

Grade 1-5

Ethiopian grades based on the defect count in a sample. Specialty buyers usually look at Grade 1 and Grade 2. Rwandan and Burundian lots are described by process and screen, for example washed, screen 15+.

04

SCA

Cupping to the SCA protocol on a 100-point scale: specialty starts at 80. SCA green grading uses a 350 g sample and counts primary and secondary defects and moisture.

What we fix
before the contract.

The lot parameters agreed on the sample become the specification attached to the contract. An independent Q grader evaluates the sample before the contract, and an independent inspector supervises stuffing.
